The Ministry of Education continues on its mission to ensure every Guyanese has access to education at every level. With this as a priority, the Diamond No. 2 Nursery School located in 5th Avenue Diamond, Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was commissioned today before an audience of students, teachers, and stakeholders in the education system.
The school was constructed to address the need for an additional nursery school to accommodate the growing population of nursery aged children in the Diamond community. This is according to Assistant Chief Education Officer (Nursery) ag, Ms. Samantha Williams. news 20180704 4
She said that the Regional Administration of Region Four found it necessary to have consultations and a feasibility study done concerning the construction of the school. She said that the construction of the school totalled $22,097,792 and was built with the dimensions 30ft x 90ft and can accommodate 120 learners.
According to Ms. Williams, the school is a grade C school and was first opened in September 2017 for the 2017 – 2018 school year. The motto of the new school is “We strive for Excellence”.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Minister of Education, Hon. Nicolette Henry, Ms. Williams said that the government of Guyana is committed to the renaissance of education in Guyana. news 20180704 3
She said that new modern facilities improve not only the school’s physical environment but also contributes to a learning culture where imagination is set free. Ms. Williams added that with the right foundation, children can go on to be whomever they wish to be.
Ms. Williams said that the education system has the responsibility to nurture their natural talent throughout their educational life. She said that the next generation cannot be left behind and must be placed on the frontline to take advantage of all opportunities the modern world offers.
Regional Chairwoman of Regional Democratic Council Region Four, Ms. Genevieve Allen during her remarks, stressed the point that every student has the potential to succeed at the highest level. Further, she stated that the school will soon benefit from an extension to the building which will allow it to accommodate more children.
According to Ms. Allen, education development is a priority for the region at the nursery, primary, secondary and at the Practical Instruction Centre levels.
During the Commissioning Ceremony, those in attendance were treated to cultural items performed by the students of the school and the Diamond Secondary School Steel Pan Orchestra.
